Equilibrium League free-to-play guide

The Equilibrium League, starting 10 August 2026, is the first League in either RuneScape game that free-to-play players can enter. This guide covers what that means and how to make the most of it without a membership. It will be updated as Jagex confirms details through July.

What F2P access means

Every previous league, including RS3's Catalyst League and all six Old School leagues, required membership. Equilibrium breaks that rule. If you have a free account, you can create a league character, complete tasks, earn league points and unlock relics like everyone else.

Jagex has not yet published the exact boundaries of free access. The open questions this guide will answer as reveals land:

Starting position

Every player starts with Misthalin and Havenhythe unlocked. That start is friendly to free players: Misthalin is the classic F2P heartland (Lumbridge, Varrock, Draynor), while Havenhythe is RS3's newest region from the 2026 expansion.

Further regions unlock by completing a set number of tasks, not by hitting skill levels. That is a real advantage for F2P: task count is a grind you control, not a wall gated by member training methods.

How points and relics work

Equilibrium follows the formula RS3 established with Catalyst:

| Mechanic | How it worked in Catalyst | | --- | --- | | Task tiers | Easy 10, Medium 30, Hard 80, Elite 200, Master 400 points | | Relic tiers | 7 tiers from 10 up to 22,000 points | | XP multiplier | 4x at tier 1 scaling to 16x at tier 7 |

Equilibrium adds combat blessings tied to your chosen alignment (Order, Balance or Chaos) and what Jagex calls enhanced relics. Exact numbers land in the July reveal posts; the task database and relic pages here update as each one goes public.

How to prepare before 10 August

  1. Nothing carries in. League characters start fresh, so there is no grinding to do beforehand. Your preparation is knowledge, not XP.
  2. Learn the Catalyst formula. Skim the Catalyst archive to understand how task routing and relic thresholds shaped the meta last time.
  3. Plan your first session. The first relic arrives within minutes of finishing the tutorial. Decide your early task route in Misthalin before launch day and you will be levels ahead of players figuring it out live.
  4. Pick your alignment early. Order, Balance and Chaos shape your combat blessings. We will publish a breakdown as soon as the mechanics are revealed.

Worth upgrading to members for the league?

If Equilibrium follows Catalyst, members will have more regions, skills and task lines available, which means more points and faster relic progression. Whether that matters depends on how Jagex structures the F2P task pool. This section gets a real answer once the task list is public: check back after the reveals.
